The first two edition of The BEST award saw Crisiano Ronaldo lift it with Messi being second. The Barcelona superstar was altogether excluded from top 3 last term as Luka Modric won the award.

The Argentine netted 51 times in 50 appearances for Barcelona and provided 22 asists. With 36 goals in 34 games, Messi helped Barcelona win their second consecutive league title, tenth of his career.

Although denied by Liverpool and Valencia for European glory and domestic double respectively. Messi has been prolific individually, scoring or assisting Barcelona’s 54.5% of league goals in 2018/19.

Van Dijk denied by Messi

In the Premier League no player dribbled past the Van Dijk last campaign. The dutch centre-back helped Liverpool to a 97 point haul but failed a point short of domestic glory.

Virgil Van Dijk’s prodigious performances were instrumental in Liverpool’s Champions League triumph. The gigantic centre-back was awarded UEFA’s Men’s Player of the Year award for the same.

Cristiano Ronaldo’s debut season in Italy ended up with domestic double. The Portuguese superstar was voted Serie A’s Player of the season despite being fourth in scoring chart. Ronaldo guided Portugal to Nation’s League glory but failed to shine in Europe with Juventus.

As of now, the fight is between Van Dijk and Lionel Messi for the golden ball. All eyes will be on who’ll claim the prestigious Ballon d’Or later this year.
